Richard F. Thomas provides us with a study of Bob Dylan's work, but it is more than a discography. It is a study of the sources that inspired Dylan to compose the lyrics he did and the writing techniques Dylan appears to have used in bringing those poems/ lyrics to us. The work is scholarly, but it is enthusiastic and reader-friendly. Thomas also details the writing techniques and the songwriting tradition well enough to silence (hopefully) scattered skeptics who question Mr. Dylan's originality. The book concluded with a fine analysis of Dylan's Nobel Address. Dylan fans should love this book, but those interested in music and writing overall should also find the book a rewarding read. This is not a book about Dylan so much as an analysis of his poetry and the Greco-Roman influences on his craft, by a Harvard professor. I appreciated learning the sources of Dylan's inspiration, and how they have influenced his many stages. I can only imagine what the author would say about "Murder Most Foul" which seems to line up with much of what is covered in this book. If you have any doubts about Dylan receiving the Nobel, read this and you'll likely be convinced.
